What will you need for your new poodle?

Here’s a guide to the basic things you will need for your new poodle.

Naming

You will of course have to decide on a name for your poodle. If you’re struggling to choose, this may give you some inspiration: https://amzn.to/42XAxyv

Feeding

Your poodle will need a water bowl, food bowl and of course food.

When it comes to food there are wet and dry options available.

Personally we opt for a dry food as we feel it’s more complete, with a nice range of food groups included.

Treats are also good.

We give our poodle her treat after we’ve eaten our evening meal and also include a denti-stick for her teeth.

Sleeping

Your poodle will also need somewhere to sleep, which could be on a dog bed, in a dog cage or even on your bed, if that’s something you allow.

Dog beds are useful because they are comfortable for your dog, can be used for naps during the day, are easy to move around the house or take away with you.

Dog cages are another option and can have a cushion added for more comfort.

You may also find it useful to have a specific blanket for your dog. Peggy likes to lie on the sofa with hers.

Walking

Poodles are an active breed and yours will need walking at least twice a day, once the two week vaccination window has passed.

You will need a collar, or a harness, and a lead.

Leads come in all shapes and sizes, either as a standard version or a retractable lead like this one: https://amzn.to/42SBvfj

You will also need poo bags and we’d recommend a biodegradable option: https://amzn.to/4b5ivMv

Grooming

Poodles don’t have fur, they have hair which is much like human hair.

You can brush your poodle every day and a brush like this is ideal: https://amzn.to/40YfGbD

Washing your dog in the shower is fairly simple and you’ll just need some dog shampoo and a towel. You can also dry your poodle with a hairdryer.

There are even dog hairdryers available, although we have never used one.

If you want to give your poodle a hair cut you can use dog clippers or scissors, though as it’s quite a hard task you may prefer to leave it to a professional (like we do).

Top tip! Our groomer suggested placing a teaspoon near our poodle’s face at a very young age to get her used to seeing something shiny, such as scissors, next to her face.

Toys

Poodles love to play.

Peggy especially loves anything that squeaks and Mr Broccoli has been a definite favourite: https://amzn.to/4aZNsSv

Peggy also has Mr Banana, Mr Orange and Mr Apple and can identify each toy.

Small balls and rope are also good and for softer toys Peggy has also enjoyed destroying a few ducks: https://amzn.to/3Qn7Q6k .
